Cards for Heroes
This is a generous offer from Cards For Heroes.Org
PURPOSE:
To send a supply of "Homemade Decorative Blank Greeting" cards to those who are deployed
Allowing the individual to write and send the cards for any occasion such as a Birthday, a quick "I Love you" or just to say Hi to those back at home
*** I doubt while deployed they have access to greeting cards and while packing for deployment this is not one of the items that is pack in with their gear!
However these cards can add a ray of sunshine back at home to find greeting card in the mail unexpectedly from a deployed Mommy or Daddy's on a child's birthday!
The cards are donated to Cards For Hero's by thousands of crafter's throughout the country and although Cards for Heroes.Org does have guidelines for the crafter's to follow each is handcrafted and made with love making each card completely unique unlike those found on store shelves
Cards for Heroes. Org- MISSION:
To support our nation’s armed forces by sending blank greeting cards to write home on, as well as cards of gratitude to encourage them.

Military Missions, Inc.
KENTUCKY CARE PACKAGES 2009
"Greetings from the Bluegrass"
Military Missions sends packages to anyone that makes a request. Most requests are local (Kentucky), however, if they get requests from anyone serving anywhere, they will send them a box. They also get requests from families across the country and will honor those requests as well.Military Missions is a small organization....nothing like Soldiers Angels or Marine Parents or other gigantic groups.
Military Missions was started by a Marine Mom who started sending boxes to her son and his friends. Word spread and five years later Military Missions is now running this small nonprofit organization.
If they were to suddenly be inundated with thousands of names, they simply could NOT send boxes to all who had submitted a request! Therefore please if your deployed soldier is already signed up to receive care packages from somewhere else do not become greedy otherwise another soldier may miss out on having care packages sent!
If you go to: http://www.militarymissionsonline.com/aboutus.htm you can read her story about the starting of Military Missions and how it grew out of love and concern!
* The 2009 level of support assistance and types of assistance offered
Care packages are sent about every 4-6 weeks depending on how many donations are collected.
***Note: An important piece of info is the approximate date of return to the US. We send boxes every 4-6 weeks and will send to the people on our list until they return to the US...however, we try to be mindful of their return date. If we send a box and the soldier is already back, the box is returned and we waste postage money.

Send a Taste of HomeOrganizers: Mike & Deb Long - Loving parents of SPC Brian Long
- To the Army Mom 101 Reader:
Send a Taste of Home is NOT a typical care package provider is the same terms as most others
However they are Important and a Vital Part of the Ongoing and Continuing Support to Our Troops in 2009 as in years past
"We had been sending him packages very 10 days filled with goodies. Towards the end of October 2006, he called us and told us how sad it made him feel that he was getting so many care packages, yet there were many of his battle buddies that got nothing. He then told us how he was sharing his care packages with them. "
"Mike, Deb's Husband started thinking about what we could do to help…and called Jim Quick, Village Fudge & Candy Shoppe asking him if he would be willing to help us to send each of the soldiers in my son’s unit some fudge (that is our son’s favorite treat from home)..."
You can read about her and the start of A Taste of Home in their blog.
It tells the whole story which can be found at: http://sendatasteofhome.org/blog/?page_id=2
***Here is my Quick Overview:
As of 2009 Taste of Home adopts one unit a year (the smallest group has been 125 soldiers with the largest group being 177 soldiers). Unlike other groups that send a little of this and a little of that… They send each soldier the exact same care package – usually focused around foods they would get from home.
What they put in each package, every year is:
* 1 pound of fudge
* 1 AT&T long distance phone card (cell phone for soldiers donates those to us)
* Store bought greeting cards – with hand written messages in them (if the unit will supply names, their names go on the front of the cards too, to make it more personal for them)
* Letters and cards made by school children
* Last year, they were fortunate enough to be able to ship 10 lbs of Starbucks coffee, stationery, pens, markers, a loaf of banana nut bread and 2 dozen cookies for each soldier. (that’s like over 3000 home baked cookies!)
Each year, they try to send different things – depending on if the unit asks for anything in particular. They even sent over 200 pounds of girl scout cookies (that we divided up so 2 units got some GS cookies).Upon emailing Deb Long she said "It's so exciting to see when people are willing to step up to the plate and Support Our Troops and seeing what they come up with to send!"
Anyone can request their unit be adopted, however at this time, they can ONLY adopt 1 unit a year… UNLESS something miraculous happens and they get unlimited funds and products to ship out.
They don’t choose individual soldiers, they are usually a full unit. They will NOT adopt a new unit for 2009 until our 2008 family comes home next month(Which will be June 2009)! Then they will be on the search for a new group to adopt. Now that that they are on twitter and Facebook, they don’t care where the unit is from The only problem is their local news likes it better if it’s a local unit which may seem a bit biased but it is true!
The type of information that needs to be provided in the initial request:
"Who the unit is, where they’re at and how many soldiers are in the unit. I’d need a contact name of who to talk to – and can answer my questions, when we start our drive for products and funds to ship the stuff"
