Still Looking for More Help to Send Your Military Person a Care Package?

I just found a few more wonderful organizations which offer care packages and other things to send to our loved ones and friends that are currently deployed.

Cards for Heroes
This is a generous offer from Cards For Heroes.Org

PURPOSE:
To send a supply of "Homemade Decorative Blank Greeting" cards to those who are deployed

Allowing the individual to write and send the cards for any occasion such as a Birthday, a quick "I Love you" or just to say Hi to those back at home

*** I doubt while deployed they have access to greeting cards and while packing for deployment this is not one of the items that is pack in with their gear!

However these cards can add a ray of sunshine back at home to find greeting card in the mail unexpectedly from a deployed Mommy or Daddy's on a child's birthday!

The cards are donated to Cards For Hero's by thousands of crafter's throughout the country and although Cards for Heroes.Org does have guidelines for the crafter's to follow each is handcrafted and made with love making each card completely unique unlike those found on store shelves

Cards for Heroes. Org- MISSION:
To support our nation’s armed forces by sending blank greeting cards to write home on, as well as cards of gratitude to encourage them.

Military Missions, Inc.

KENTUCKY CARE PACKAGES 2009

"Greetings from the Bluegrass"

Military Missions sends packages to anyone that makes a request. Most requests are local (Kentucky), however, if they get requests from anyone serving anywhere, they will send them a box. They also get requests from families across the country and will honor those requests as well.

Military Missions is a small organization....nothing like Soldiers Angels or Marine Parents or other gigantic groups.

Military Missions was started by a Marine Mom who started sending boxes to her son and his friends. Word spread and five years later Military Missions is now running this small nonprofit organization.

If they were to suddenly be inundated with thousands of names, they simply could NOT send boxes to all who had submitted a request! Therefore please if your deployed soldier is already signed up to receive care packages from somewhere else do not become greedy otherwise another soldier may miss out on having care packages sent!

If you go to: http://www.militarymissionsonline.com/aboutus.htm you can read her story about the starting of Military Missions and how it grew out of love and concern!

* The 2009 level of support assistance and types of assistance offered
Care packages are sent about every 4-6 weeks depending on how many donations are collected.

***Note: An important piece of info is the approximate date of return to the US. We send boxes every 4-6 weeks and will send to the people on our list until they return to the US...however, we try to be mindful of their return date. If we send a box and the soldier is already back, the box is returned and we waste postage money.

Send a Taste of Home

Organizers: Mike & Deb Long - Loving parents of SPC Brian Long

Jim Quick : Owner, Village Fudge & Candy Shoppe
To the Army Mom 101 Reader:

Send a Taste of Home is NOT a typical care package provider is the same terms as most others
However they are Important and a Vital Part of the Ongoing and Continuing Support to Our Troops in 2009 as in years past

Deb Long a military mom who started A Taste of Home while her son was deployed in 2006 (and his unit is currently scheduled to go back the end of this year 2009. )

"We had been sending him packages very 10 days filled with goodies. Towards the end of October 2006, he called us and told us how sad it made him feel that he was getting so many care packages, yet there were many of his battle buddies that got nothing. He then told us how he was sharing his care packages with them. "

"Mike, Deb's Husband started thinking about what we could do to help…and called Jim Quick, Village Fudge & Candy Shoppe asking him if he would be willing to help us to send each of the soldiers in my son’s unit some fudge (that is our son’s favorite treat from home)..."

You can read about her and the start of A Taste of Home in their blog.
It tells the whole story which can be found at:
http://sendatasteofhome.org/blog/?page_id=2

***Here is my Quick Overview:
As of 2009 Taste of Home adopts one unit a year (the smallest group has been 125 soldiers with the largest group being 177 soldiers). Unlike other groups that send a little of this and a little of that… They send each soldier the exact same care package – usually focused around foods they would get from home.

What they put in each package, every year is:

* 1 pound of fudge

* 1 AT&T long distance phone card (cell phone for soldiers donates those to us)

* Store bought greeting cards – with hand written messages in them (if the unit will supply names, their names go on the front of the cards too, to make it more personal for them)

* Letters and cards made by school children

* Last year, they were fortunate enough to be able to ship 10 lbs of Starbucks coffee, stationery, pens, markers, a loaf of banana nut bread and 2 dozen cookies for each soldier. (that’s like over 3000 home baked cookies!)

Each year, they try to send different things – depending on if the unit asks for anything in particular. They even sent over 200 pounds of girl scout cookies (that we divided up so 2 units got some GS cookies).

Upon emailing Deb Long she said "It's so exciting to see when people are willing to step up to the plate and Support Our Troops and seeing what they come up with to send!"

Anyone can request their unit be adopted, however at this time, they can ONLY adopt 1 unit a year… UNLESS something miraculous happens and they get unlimited funds and products to ship out.

They don’t choose individual soldiers, they are usually a full unit. They will NOT adopt a new unit for 2009 until our 2008 family comes home next month(Which will be June 2009)! Then they will be on the search for a new group to adopt. Now that that they are on twitter and Facebook, they don’t care where the unit is from The only problem is their local news likes it better if it’s a local unit which may seem a bit biased but it is true!

The type of information that needs to be provided in the initial request:
"Who the unit is, where they’re at and how many soldiers are in the unit. I’d need a contact name of who to talk to – and can answer my questions, when we start our drive for products and funds to ship the stuff"

If you have any questions regarding Operation: Send a Taste of Home - please click here to email us.

More Care Packages

For Deployed Troops ONLY

***Provides Letters, Pictures and Care Packages

Hearts Across the Miles

Goal- To make sure no Service Member goes to mail call only to feel forgotten

We accept requests for care packages from deployed troops only. We've found some family members are searching the Internet for groups like ours and signing up their deployed military member for multiple programs and then inundating their units with tons of supplies.

Unfortunately, our organization is a group of military members that has local troops to support and not a lot of funds. We simply can't support requests such as these. So, years ago, we limited our outside requests to troops down range because we believe they wouldn't ask for more than they need. We don't believe the families intend to do this on purpose, but they do tax people's resources.

As for helping family members, we do the best we can, but on a very limited basis. Our main focus is the troops down range.

***NOTE: It does appear Hearts Across the Miles will accept special requests however due to the fact they rely on items to be donated do not be disappointed if those special requests go unfilled

S.O.S.

I think 2009 should be officially declared the Year America Supports Our Soldier's by individual Americans, corporate America and our U.S. Government.

On July 1, 1973, during the Vietnam War. the all-volunteer military in the United States became a reality.

Since then the U.S. military has been filled by individuals who join for a variety of personal reasons for such as the ability to travel to foreign countries, educational benefits some choose to do so because they lack work experience.

The United States of America's military branches are filled by our sons, daughters, Aunts and Uncles For some it is our next door neighbor, co-workers and others it is Mom or Dad who are in the military.

Some may find these statistics a shock others may not care about the numbers, but these statistics are more than numbers. These are people some we may know or be related to. Because they serve our country by choice, the rest of us do not need to worry about being drafted by law in to the military. Allowing the rest of America to relax at home in the United States sitting back playing on our X-Box, watching DVD's, going to the movies and eating at McDonald's!

Oh I almost forgot about the stats!

According to Aaron Glantz website "The War Comes Home" at: http://www.warcomeshome.org/about "More than 1.6 million Americans have served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan." that was the statistics at the time the article was published.

Here are more of the statistics posted on his website:
American Casualties of Iraq and Afghanistan
Dead: 4,710
Wounded: 32,799
Injured: 10,685
Ill: 29,881
Received Treatment from VA: 324,846
Filed A Disability Claim: 287,790

The article states"These numbers from the Pentagon and Department of Veterans Affairs were obtained by Veterans for Common Sense using the Freedom of Information Act."

According to The Washington Post as of April 30, 2009
Total Fatalities-
Operation Iraqi Freedom: 4,253
Operation Enduring Freedom: 671
Wounded: 31,215
(Updated April 30, 2009)

I want to remind everybody these statistics could be much higher!
And these numbers are people! They are Americans!

I want to urge Army Mom 101 readers remind your neighbors, friends, family, Church and Government leader's we as of today have American soldiers who still need our support!

The Organizations who offer support, care packages and other assistance to the American military personnel and their families such as the organizations listed here in Army Mom 101, these organizations simply need us to financially support their work if they are to continue in their efforts!

REMINDER: If in today's tight economy you can still find the funds for having you nails or hair styled professionally or if you can find the funds for going to the movies or even McDonald's then remember S.O.S.

A Potpourri of Resources

As with All Army Mom 101's Posts This is a A Potpourri of Resources For Military Personnel Past and Present
As I discover information that maybe helpful I will publish it in a post and hope I can help another military connected individual or family in some capacity to find resources that may have gone otherwise unnoticed.

I just found this website and it really stood out, because as I was reading it caught my attention when I read, "More than 1.7 million American troops have served in Iraq or Afghanistan, and thousands have been deployed multiple times."

As it affects the lives of so many Americans and particularly American Troops that have served or are currently serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, I want to highlight features of the website as a resource available that many maybe unaware of.

Although I am a U.S. Veteran myself I do not qualify for the membership requirements to sign in, therefore I do not know firsthand how good the site is but, in my opinion it the site appears to be highly beneficial as an added resource to any qualifying Veteran.

Please Note: I cannot give every detail about the site but I will share what I did find

IAVA Mission and History
Website Link to this Page: http://iava.org/content/iava-mission-and-history

The Need:
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are in their sixth and seventh years respectively. More than 1.7 million American troops have served in Iraq or Afghanistan, and thousands have been deployed multiple times.

IAVA addresses critical issues facing new veterans and their families, including mental health, Traumatic Brain Injury, a stretched VA system, inadequate health coverage for national guardsmen and reservists, and outdated GI Bill educational benefits.

IAVA is dedicated to educating the public about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, advocating on behalf of those who have served, and fostering a community for troops, veterans, and their families.

History:
IAVA was founded in 2004 by current Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff and his fellow Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. After returning home from their tours, these veterans came together after quickly becoming concerned with the way the war in Iraq was being portrayed in the media and the overall plight of newly returned veterans. There were many policy experts and talking heads on TV, but very few people who had actually served on the ground in Iraq or Afghanistan. There was no one talking about what our wounded friends needed and the issues they faced. The creation of IAVA allowed thousands of veterans to join the national dialogue, and to explain what was really happening on the ground overseas and back home in the US.

It is an extra cost, added to your ticket. If you’re just going to be at Disney World one or two days, I don’t recommend it –just pick the park with the longest hours (usually Magic Kingdom or EPCOT) and see it for the day.

At three days the extra cost is better, and starting with four days, the park hopper pass is a bargain! It’s a great way to relax on your vacation and see what you want to see, when you want to see it.

Care Packages for Deployed Soldiers

*** Just to let you know you will find this Gentle Reminder on each New Post as I think it is worth remembering!

When deciding to find care package's to be shipped to the deployed soldier's
- PLEASE DO NOT BECOME GREEDY!!
Our nation's economy is not in good shape and that is no secret! Most organizations offering care packages only exist because of the generosity of donations and volunteers. As the economy worsens the donations are almost sure to drop off. To ensure there is enough care packages to spread around so that no soldier is denied due to a lack of resources, PLEASE BE GENEROUS AND DO NOT BECOME GREEDY!

If you can donate cash, supplies or volunteer your time please contact the organization of your choice

Starting Here You Will Find A List Of Organizations Defining the Type of Help Being Offered For Deployed Soldiers and Contact Information

Suggestion: For a wealth of up to date information check out:
http://www.anysoldier.com/WhatToSend.cfm

Note: I will try to remember for each entry to indicate who is allowed to make a "Request" such as the individual soldier, family member or anybody.

When sending an email with a request make sure to include your contact information in addition to the contact information for the person the request is for

Before you send us an email, please read the FAQ and the HELP Forum. If the issue is covered in one of those areas, you will not receive a response from us. REMEMBER-
Those deployed do NOT have a big closet to store the stuff
They do NOT have a BIG dresser like at home

WHEN the Deployment is over and your soldier is ready to head home
Airlines do impose weight limits on baggage/luggage

If the soldiers bags weigh too much for for flight regulations, the deployed soldier has limited options:

First the soldier will pack what MUST come back
Secondly a decision to take what is most important
Then the soldier MUST decide what to do with everything that cannot come home
-Ship it separately
-Give to somebody whose deployment is longer than theirs
-Throw some of the stuff away

The reality is they really don't care if it stays behind-THEY JUST WANT TO COME HOME!!!

As a gentle reminder for those who are about to deploy or are currently deployed:

You already know those left back home love you and as often as we are able we will ship stuff to you!
Please as you find a moment or two let those at home know what kind of stuff you want, what you need, what is in short supply at your PX , the stuff that is hard to find or impossible to find on the shelves.
If we at home are determined to send stuff then please help us to help you! Who knows better than you WHAT YOU NEED THAN YOU!

Sending Suff to My Deployed Son

I am not a writer, and this is my first blog. I am simply the Mom of a Deployed US Army Soldier, who is now Re-Deployed. I am inept in computers and have spent countless hours attempting to find help in sending care packages to my son.

There are many organizations out there that have much support to offer to currently deployed military service members, their families back at home, to fallen and wounded warriors and to veterans. The problem I discovered recently so much of the sites available online are now out of date and some are, "Dead Links".

I am now on a mission to post information and CURRENT live links as I find them to help deployed service members, families and friends. It is no big secret American families are struggling financially as our economy steadily grow more sour with each passing day, I am in the same financial boat.

I am a Veteran who served in the Army during peacetime in the 70's. Just prior to my son deploying near Christmas 2008 I underwent major surgery while he was here visiting on a 2 week block leave. So here it is now Sunday March, 8th 2009 and I JUST returned to work this past week! I assure you I have plenty of bills piled up waiting to be paid.

I made a vow to myself this deployment, I WILL send him a care package EVERY 2 WEEKS! OK SO THIS IS A PROBLEM! I AM IN A FINANCIAL"CRUNCH" So the past couple of weeks I have scoured online for anybody, any legitimate organization CURRENTLY offering care packages for those who are deployed...This is not an easy task for somebody who is completely inept with computers skills! Plus it makes it all that much more difficult because I don't know of ANYBODY in my community who knows somebody or is related to somebody that is deployed in any branch of the service!

WELL THE GOOD NEWS...YES there are organizations today who still offer to send care packages to deployed soldiers. I did discover online many blogs filled with hints and tips as to what can and cannot be shipped due to restrictions, as well tips on how to pack the items so that they arrive in tact.

It is my intent to provide updates as to where such help can be found and the levels of support offered currently in 2009.
